Community Involvement
Birko and its employees are proud to support our communities, both locally and nationally.
Fundraising efforts
American Cancer Society We raise funds and participate in relay teams in support of the American Cancer Society to fund groundbreaking cancer research, crucial patient care services, and prevention and early detection programs.
Denver Kids, Inc. The Birko Run Team participates each year in the Colfax Marathon to raise money for Denver Kids, Inc., a group that helps Denver’s most at-risk students stay in school, graduate, and become contributing members of the community.
Tour de Fresh Birko raises funds and rides in Tour de Fresh, presented by The California Giant Foundation, a three-day cycling event that benefits the national Salad Bars to Schools initiative. Salad Bars to Schools has helped provide salad bars to over 5,000 schools benefitting 3 million children.
Birko also supports local organizations: Adams County Economic Development and the National Western Stock Show.
Academic support and scholarships
Ward Harris Smith Scholarship Foundation
In honor of Birko’s founder, The Ward Harris Smith Scholarship Foundation was established at Texas A&M in 1980.
Florence Smith-Powers Scholarship Fund
In February 2012, Birko established the Florence Smith-Powers scholarship fund through The North American Meat Institute for deserving undergraduates in food science.
Food Safety in Higher Education
Birko supports Colorado State University, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Cal Poly, and Fresno State by volunteering and collaborating on research for the betterment of food safety and sanitation.
